Sometimes, it’s the little things that bring us a little extra joy when it comes to owning our Volvo XC90. Yes, when your car is a 2004, there will obviously be little wear things that bother you. The paint that’s rubbed of the trunk door from being opened and closed thousands of times and the scratched up headlights that look a little dimmer than normal are just a few. (I do polish my headlights every spring and fall, so that not a huge issue for me.)
One thing that many XC90 owners complain about is the condition of their wheel bolts. They aren’t technically lug nuts because they aren’t nuts. They’re bolts. And if yours are anything like mine, they’ve seen better, and shinier, days.
When I look at my XC90’s still-beautiful alloy rims and then look at the wheel bolts you can see the slight corrosion and wear that has come with a dozen years and 125,000 miles off driving.
I’ve often thought about painting my Volvo wheel bolts with some black paint to make them look new again, but I just know that after the first wheel removal, that paint will be chipped and probably look worse than before I applied it.
The solution? 19mm silicone wheel bolt caps for your Volvo XC90 from AliExpress.
For around $10CAD, you can have a nice set of black (or blue or red, and I’ve seen other colors, too) wheel caps that look nice and are easily removed when you want to (or need) to remove your wheel.
My advice:
1. Buy the black ones. If you buy these silicon wheel bolt covers in a bright color, they’ll grab attention – and then probably get grabbed. Either someone will take all of them, or just a few to annoy you and show their jealous that you have them and they don’t. The black ones actually look like they are wheel bolts and they are less likely to catch the attention of grabby hands.
2. Buy a second set. I’m sure that these silicone caps fit well, but there’s always a chance that a few may fall off, or someone removing a wheel may misplace one or two. For the price, buying a second set just makes sense.
For some people, they can live with worn wheel bolts. For others, silicone covers is a great way to spruce up your XC90. For me, I’m going to buy a pair in black but ONLY use them in the summer. Here in the north, we get a lot of varied weather and I’d hate for one to fall off because some water got behind it and froze. Not taking that chance – even though these are really (REALLY) affordable.
